The PADI Open Water Diver certification is the world's most popular entry-level scuba course, broken down into three main phases: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives, and Open Water Dives. It allows you to dive independently with a buddy up to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet).
Course Structure and Requirements
Phase 1 - Knowledge Development: Learn scuba basics online via PADI eLearning or the PADI App, completing independent study, videos, and quizzes. [1]
Phase 2 - Confined Water Dives: Practice and master basic safety and equipment skills in a pool or pool-like shallow water environment with an instructor. [1, 2]
Phase 3 - Open Water Dives: Complete 4 dives in an ocean, lake, or quarry to review skills and explore the underwater world under professional supervision. [1, 2]
